The Center of the Theatre of the Oppressed – CTO-Rio welcomes students, researchers and all those who practice Theatre of the Oppressed all over the world, all year round. CTO-Rio usually receives in our center individuals interested in learning, researching or those wishing to delve deeper into the methods of Theatre of the Oppressed. Interested applicants from Africa or Asia are benefited by the UNESCO scholarship program, that chooses one participant per year and finances his/her stay in CTO-Rio for three months including roundtrip to Rio de Janeiro, hotels, food and other costs they might have.

The CTO-Rio is not a formal school; for this reason it does not offer a program with a strict curriculum, nor does it offer a number of set classes and a pre-established schedule. The international exchange of the CTO-Rio is a program of activities, during which, participants can follow and, in some cases, participate directly, in projects developments, rehearsals and presentations of the our Popular TO Groups, theatrical Workshops, production of plays by the CTO´s group of Jokers, as well as all the activities that are promoted by the institution which integrates the web of “Points of Culture” sponsored by the Ministry of Culture.

Besides this, the exchange students may also participate in some of the Seminaries and Theatrical Laboratories directed by Augusto Boal.

The CTO-Rio also offers the participants access to photos, videos, theatrical texts, books, promotional material and publications that are a small part of the historical background of the institution and of the Theatre of the Oppressed in Brazil and throughout the world.

In order for the participant to make the most of this experience, it is ideal that the exchange period be at least three months in duration. If this is not a possibility, the minimum amount of time required is one month. If the participant is less available and can not stay for the minimum one month, he/she can still contact the institution and schedule a visit to one of the developing activities in the CTO-Rio, during the time he/she is in the city.

Since the CTO-Rio team develops diverse projects throughout such a large nation, the intern interested in learning about the activities developed outside of Rio, must cover expenses such as transportation and stay.
